Sonia Gandhi is currently the biggest leader of the Indian National Congress and also the most powerful woman in Indian politics. She is a Lok Sabha MP from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh which has been a Congress stronghold for a long time. She grew up in Italy and later settled in India after marrying the Prime Minister, late Sh. Rajiv Gandhi.
Although she never initially showed interest in joining politics. But long after the death of Rajiv Gandhi, when the political upheaval in the Congress continued and there was a lack of a strong leadership, she had to enter politics under compulsion. She thus saved the Congress from disintegration. Notwithstanding the political background, she handled the command of the party very well and stood in opposition to the late Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government.
